GILOYE is also known as gurjo, heart-leaved moonseed, guduchi. Its scientific name is Tinospora cordifolia
In Ayurveda, Giloy is considered one of the
best medicines to treat various fevers and other conditions. Giloy is
one of the three Amrit plants. Amrit means the 'root of immortality. Hence, it
is also called Amritavalli or Amrita in Sanskrit. It has been in use for
centuries in traditional medicine to treat various disorders. It is rich
in nutrients and is used to make the herbal and ayurvedic medicines. The stem of giloye is considered as highly
effective because of the nutrients available in it and the alkaloids found in
it.
Giloy is a parasitic creeper that normally strangulates all other
trees except Neem and Bel. When its host is either of them, it also gets their
properties in part. Hence it becomes more potent.
It is said that during Samundra Manthan, when the pot full of Amrita, came out of sea, the demons took it and ran away. So while running few drops of Amrita fell on earth which took the form of a climbing herb known as Giloy.
A study by the Jamnagar-based Gujarat Ayurved University was done see the effects of Giloye. So they did an experiment on common fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster).
The lifespan of the flies, which is not more than 29 to 30 days, increased to about 85 days after they were fed concentrations of Giloy powder for 30 days, the study has claimed. It has been published in the Netherlands-based Wolters Kluwer, a reputed journal on healthcare.
The flies are among the most extensively studied animal models for understanding the process of ageing and longevity.
